Methodology

The Verigene (R)  Respiratory Pathogen (RP) test is a rapid multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test that detects common community-acquired pathogenic respiratory viruses and bacteria from NP flocked swab sample in UTM (Universal Transport Medium).  It will detect nucleic acid genes for Adenovirus, Human Metapneumovirus, Influenza A (subtype H1), Influenza A (subtype H3), Influenza B, Parainfluenza types 1, 2, 3 or 4, Rhinovirus, RSV A, RSV B, Bordetella Group, (B. pertussis, parapertussis & bronchiseptica), Bordetella holmesii, and Bordetella pertussis.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen should be delivered to laboratory within 1 hour of collection.

Specimen:  Nasopharyngeal swab

Collection Instructions:   Label container with patient's full name and 1 addition unique patient identifier such as date of birth, medical record number, emergency ID number, date and time of colleciton, collector's initials, and type of specimen.
