Methodology
Glucose Oxidase/Hydrogen Peroxide (Trinder)
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: 3.0-mL gray-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube
Specimen: Full tube
Collection Instructions: Fasting - overnight (8-16 hour). No alcohol may be taken with the evening meal prior to test. Nothing should be taken by mouth after midnight. Water may be taken according to thirst. Patient should refrain from salicylates, nicotine, estrogens, and diuretic agents for 3 days prior to test. If not practicable, record medication. For pediatrics, draw blood in a green-top MICROTAINER®.
1. Patient should remain seated comfortably during test. No undue exercise or smoking.
2. Draw a fasting specimen. (If fasting glucose level is >126 mg/dL, call ordering physician to confirm test need.)
3. Administer Trutol Glucose Tolerance Test Solution.
a. Non-pregnant adults: Trutol 75 g Glucose Tolerance Test Solution
b. Pregnant adults: Trutol 100 g Glucose Tolerance Test Solution
c. Children: Trutol 1.75 g glucose per kilogram body weight to a maximum of 75 g of glucose
4. Patient should drink solution within 5 minutes.
5. Draw specimen 2 hour after Trutol Glucose Solution.
Note: 1. The solutions are considered more palatable when served over crushed ice.
2. Label tube(s) with patient’s full name and 1 additional unique patient identifier such as date of birth, medical record number, emergency ID number, date and time of draw, collector’s initials, type of specimen, and appropriately as fasting, 1-hour, and 2-hour specimens.
